Is it possible to get around the 200hp mark with a 5S-FE engine? or would it be smarter and cheaper just to go with a 3sgte? Im asking because in wake county, nc where i live, emissions are really strict, and the pass no cars w/ not stock engines. And if i did do a swap, would this engine be fine.
http://www.totaljdm.com/index.cfm The engine is under engines, then Toyota, the Celica. BTW: im in a mechinics program, and when im out of high school (im a junior) im going to UTI. And i know basic about engines, but i've never done a swap, but me and my dad would prolly try it in our garage, and my neighbors a mech. and i could ask him to kind of point us in the right direction. IMO... boost is the easy way out in terms of making power... nothing against it... but nothing beats the roar of a well built n/a motor.
As for your original question... the secret to power in the 5SFE starts in the head. The stock head doesn't flow very well... and it responds very well to headwork. A lot of people have claimed up to 800% flow increases, rivaling even modded 3SGE heads (unlikely, but people on the MR2 boards have claimed so). Anyways... that's where you start. From there... camshafts, upgraded valve springs, valves, etc... It won't be cheap. Hitting the 200hp mark will take some work that is a bit beyond bolt-on performance parts. Bolt-ons just don't do enough on Toyota motors... but every little bit helps. This is speaking without regard to emissions though... camshafts will kill your ability to smog... -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"
