i have a squeeking noise coming from my driver's side front tire and a weird thunking noise when I turn semi-hard to the right...not sure which tire that is. brakes are disc in front and drum in rear. the brakes were serviced all the way around about 7-8 months ago. I recently came back from a 2 week long trip and its been really bad. any ideas?

My car was making the following sounds; a low speed squeak (persistent under braking) that went away at about 35mph, and the horrible grinding/clunking around corners. The problem was wheel bearings. I also replaced my right side ball joint, as it was worn out. Jack up your car and take a look at the ball joint boots, and also check for any play in the hubs by pulling on the wheel (or removing the wheel and directly checking the hub).
If it is your bearings, have a shop do them unless you can get to a good press. Cost was about $110, and it took me all day due to one inner bearing race being extremely difficult to remove. The rest of the pressing operations took perhaps 45 minutes. |
