i took apart my stock cdplayer today because it was playing the radio and the cd at the same time. and i took it apart to see if any wires were loose or if there was any dust. and theres a switch in the cd player portion that has a choice of flipping it to D or P. what does this switch do?

Well, cd player and radio at the same time. I wish I knew how to make my CD player do that
