Hey, granted this really isn't celica related, but it could be addapted to be.
Go to www.ststurbo.com and look around. I would have put this in OT, but I knew I wouldn't get all the traffic I would here. The turbo's on the cars listed are placed just before the muffler. I wanted to see your opinions on this. |

Wow, neat.
Problems: 1) You need to get a new exhaust manifold; and exhaust to the turbo by the muffler anyway; because stock isn't large enough to handle the turbo'd airflow. 2) More turbo lag? It seems like there'd be a lot more piping here than even a FMIC setup. With this setup, the exhaust gases actually have PIPING to go through to spin the turbine- that seems to me it equals a lot more lag- and if you wanted an IC; you'd still have even MORE piping.. However, the temperature gains by not being located in the engine compartment are nothing to scoff at. 3) Emissions legal my ass. This would only pass a visual inspections check; measuring emissions at the muffler would still result in too many pollutants for an N/A car- ahh! the jig is up! After reading further: 1) They even admit that the stock manifolds and exhaust systems are restrictive, but say it doesn't matter because they lower the diameter of the piping to increase exhaust flow to the turbo.. IE, smaller turbo.. but they don't mention the fact that exhaust gasses will be slowed down int eh first .01 seconds of leaving the engine.. 2) Apparently there's a built in IC, and they're using an extremely small turbo designed only for 5-6 psi of boost. They don't provide an answer to my #3; All in all, it's great to see new work being done with turbochargers |
