i figured engines would be best place for this, i drove my brothers 97 saturn sc1 today and i floored it, (its an automatic) and when it got to the redline (5500) it kept on going to about 6k.... im puzzled i thoguht they were supposed stop at or before the redline, mine stops a few hundred rpm before. can anyone tell me if this is normal or not? thanks

Well, couple things. In my car at least, if I all out floor it (as hard down and as far as it will go) I rev to right around 5600 in "1st", 5400 in "2nd", and 5200 in "3rd". I haven't topped out "4th" in quite some time, and when I did I got a speeding ticket (104 in a 70...) so I really can't say what I hit there. But, if you REALLY want to get those extra RPMs out of your car, you can shift it, but I warn you, it's dangerous to your engine and your transmission. I've been able to run first up to 34mph, second through 62mph, and third right around 85mph while shifting, and the engine sound is AWESOME, but I really wouldn't recommend it for daily driving.
I forgot I was in 2nd once as well... lol... went past redline and hit fuel cut. When you're not in Overdrive, you can go past redline. It's an interesting experience. -Brian |
