i figured engines would be best place for this, i drove my brothers 97 saturn sc1 today and i floored it, (its an automatic) and when it got to the redline (5500) it kept on going to about 6k.... im puzzled i thoguht they were supposed stop at or before the redline, mine stops a few hundred rpm before. can anyone tell me if this is normal or not? thanks

I have shifted my celica since I got it...25k miles...tranny never has skipped a beat or anything. I can always put it back to drive if I want and it shifts justas smooth as it ever did. I then go to shifting and first gear redlines ot about 40, second to a little after 70, and third a little after 105 thats when i put it in overdrive and watch it sail to 125 where the limiter kicks in. I have shifted my tranny forever and it is fine.

The Saturn automatic trannies though are very very weak. I have two co-workers that drive newer saturns and the trannies have burnt out in them after a little over 60k miles...without even being hard on them. Now the SC series Saturns have a WOT switch that acts as the GM performance switch you had discussed earlier. At WOT the Saturn dumps all economizing and will go as best it can, which was meant to ease passing on highways because earlier Saturn's were known to be hesitant when trying to pass on highways at speeds of 65 or higher.
