The company was started in 1937, in what was originally a factory for producing equipment for the textile industry. At first it was called Toyeda, but changed it after a contest for a better-sounding name. The new name was written in eight Japanese letters, a number that is considered lucky in Japan. When Japanese companies began expanding to the Western market, the company had no graphical logo. They chose the modern emblem of three ellipses only in 1989. The two ellipses crossed in the center represent the letter ‘t’ and the third ellipse symbolizes ‘the spirit of understanding in design’. The surrounding space shows the future possibilities and technological expansion of the company. Toyota is one of the biggest and most popular manufacturers of high quality, cheap and secure automobiles in the world and the biggest in Japan. It produces cars of all classes (over 50 families of models). Owns factories overseas. Produces specialized regional models and has separate export programs for the USA, Europe and other countries. Invests huge sums of money into research and development. Owns the trademark Lexus and cooperates with other large manufacturers, e.g. Daihatsu, Volkswagen and others.
Toyota is the third largest airplane manufacturer in the world. By the number of cars produced Toyota is fourth, outpaced by Volkswagen, but it dominates in Japan. It sells almost twice as many cars as Nissan.
