well can it be done.. and if so what are gains/cons also am pretty sure this would trigger a check engine light.. how can I rewire it to fix that.

Most of the cons created by the egr are reduced or negated from the ecm controlling timing and injector behavior during high egr operations. removing it would reduce nastry crap inside of the intake manifold, but the ecm won't like that. I'm not sure if the ecm will still change the timing if it knows that the egr is not working, but that is the probable cause of the extra detonation. The egr is an INTEGRAL part of the engine operation under a stock ecm and removing would not be a good idea.
