The article is as follows:
"Does Toyota really need a supercar? Probably not, but if you're a carmaker bent on world domination there's no piece of real estate you can leave unoccupied. With 500 hp now the standard entry fee into the supercar realm, Toyota's TXS midengine machine should have at least that much on tap when it debuts at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. Rumors abound of an exotic V10 abord this radical machine based on the architecture Toyota has been using in Formula One. However there are also rumors of hybrid drivetrains with the gasoline engine being used to drive electric motors in the hubs of each wheel. We'll go with the conventional V10 (think 5.0 liters 50 valves, VVTL-i valve timing, and low-mass reciprocating components for a 9000 RPM redline) drivetrain rumor for now, but the relatively long and tall nose (for a midengine car) on this prototype makes us wonder if it's covering a battery pack of some sort. Though the prototype is covered with enouch camouflage to hide the 101st Airborne, there are a few clues visible on this beast. Note the big ground effects tunnel down low at the rear with the exhuast system centered along the car's spine for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. That centered drivetrain, including the V10 and it's accompanying seven-speed transmission, also indicated the engine may be a stressed member in the chassis and the extensive use of carbon fiber in the structure to keep weight down- it's less than 3,000 pounds. Beyond that, the rear wing is obviously a temporary piece designed to test various levels of downforce and determine what's ideal for the production car. The TXS name won't stick to this car as it enters production. And with a price tag of more than $100,000, we expect it will actually be a flagship for the Lexus as that brand expands worldwide. It could go on sale as early as this winter. Look for Ford GT and Ferrari F430 drivers to begin cowering soon after." Then it has the pics we've all seen, the black Supra-looking car covered in a canvas on a track. This post has been edited by Akimbo: Dec 14, 2004 - 3:38 PM -------------------- |
