it did, but not nearly as badly as other parts of the region:

(CNN) -- Ten countries have been affected by the tsunamis triggered by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake near Indonesia.

The death toll is estimated to be more than 22,000 and is expected to climb sharply once officials can assess information from remote and badly damaged areas such as in Indonesia.

The impact of disease and injuries caused by the giant waves will also increase the grim toll in the days ahead.

Preliminary figures for countries affected so far are:

Bangladesh: 2;

India: 6,200;

Indonesia: 4,448 (est. may rise sharply);

Malaysia: 52;

Maldives: 46;

Myanmar (formerly Burma): 34;

Seychelles: 3;

Somalia: 38;

Sri Lanka: 10,529;

Thailand: 870.
