The grease keeps all of the ball bearings in there from grinding together and causing bad things to happen. You should replace the whole unit, but if you want to be brave you could rebuild it and repack the joints with grease but its much easier to just buy a new one, plus it will probably last longer if you just shell out the money to buy new ones.
