i have to press the brake pedal down ~ 2 in. before i feel resistance. is it like that for everyone? are my brakes not working correctly or are they just off adjustment?

There is a little kit that you can get at any local auto parts store that makes bleeding the brakes fool proof. If you really have to push hard or there is a lot of travel in the pedal with no response, you might want to check: Air in the lines(bleeding), wheel cylinders (calipers) leaking, and finally the master cylinder diaphram may be leaking. If you have no experience with brakes, and if bleeding them doesn't help, DO NOT do it yourself!!!
