I read on here that there is something you can do to the st185 tranny so it doesn't turn the drive shaft anymore for the rear wheels. I can't find the thread anymore but has anyone done this and how does it work out? Also anybody have anymore info on this?

sorry guys...i quoted the wrong guy...lol
celica3sgte, i understand that you have been using the 5sfe tranny for while now....how has it been holding up for you? i think that a lot of these tranny problems people report are either missdiagnosed or trannys that were on their way out anyway. most of the type people think their synchros are shot because they cant shift too good. a lot of that stuff has to do with cable bushings, clutch adjustments, a clutch that is about to fail, or oil in the tranny. you really cant expect your 200,000mile tranny, that has never had its oil changed, to hold up to the added power, but if you ketp your car in good shape, and you dont have crazy miles on your car, i think you will be fine with a 5s tranny. So far my GT tranny has endured my driving. Right now I only have around 225 whp. None of the tuners down here are using the GT tranny above 300 whp. They are using the alltrac tranny with lsd or mr2 tranny with alltrac pieces.
Exactly kwanza, Either way you go, 1) using the mr2 tranny or 2) using the alltrac tranny you are gonna need to get both trannies, so it's personal preference. If using the mr2 tranny, noone will sell you just the shift actuator, and shift levers from an alltrac tranny. Most likely you'll have to buy the whole tranny. Personally, I don't want to drill and tap any new holes to align new pieces. That's one advantage of using the st185 tranny. You don't need to remove any of these pieces because the motor isn't a mid-engine and nothing needs to be changed around. Either tranny will work for a modded 3s swap. And everyone has their own opinion, but you can't change the fact that the st185 tranny is has beefier parts and is stronger. |
