Simple and general question.......what is a limited slip diff, what does it do, and who has it??

I'm not sure but did i read that if we add an LSD to our stock tranny usually its good for a little bit more HP? I'm looking at building my 3s up to about 300hp and I already know the e153 would be the best choice off the bat, but would the stock tranny (s54) w/ LSD handle it?
