Sony HC21 or Panasonic GS31. Look into both of those modles. The panasonic has more features on it, like a built in light, a memory card slot for the still images (only about .6mp though, real bad quality). but the sony is nicer. it runs off the touch lcd screen, better night mode, stuff like that. both have pretty similar video quality both around the $400 price range. that would give you a little bit of room to pick up a bigger battery, cuz the ones the come with dont last long at all, and a good one cost normally around $80 from a store. the JVC lagos said is aight, alot better than their older modles, but im still not a fan of JVC. the canon you were looking at, just like coomer said is noisey. if your in a quiet setting like indoors, you can actually hear the motor noise on the tape. it also struggles in low light. lemme know if you have any questions, i work with this **** all day long...

edit: on the subject of the miniDV vs. the dvd ones... the DVD ones are nice for sheer convience. you film your stuff, burn the disk, pop it in a DVD player. the only two downfalls of them is, you can only hold 20 minutes of high quality video per DVD, and your very limited with your editing. im still a fan of DV tapes.
