QUOTE(ILuvMyCelica95 @ Jun 3, 2005 - 5:06 PM) Vehicle and Traffic Law- NY state § 375 31. Mufflers and exhaust systems. Prevention of noise. Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the highways of the state, shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler and exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise and no such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with cut-out, bypass, or similar device. No person shall modify muffler or exhaust system, in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor or exhaust system of a motor vehicle above that emitted by the motor or exhaust system originally installed on the vehicle and such original muffler and exhaust system shall comply with all the requirements of this section: The bold part is the one that kind of prevents you from "legally" changing your exhaust. What ever came on the car is how it must stay. I mean if you just changed the piping size up to like 3 inches and kept the stock muffler, no one would ever give you a problem. But if you get really really technical, it would be illegal because it would cause more air flow , which the original muffler was not built to handle/ filter (or however you wanna say it) and also cause more noise. Personally, i have been hassled for mine a couple times tho never ticketed, but my friend has worldcom muffler (i THINK thats the name of it), but it allows for same performance and everything as like a "greddy" muffler, but sounds stock, just a lil louder and i think i may put it on just so i do not have to worry about being bothered. To each its own. |
