OK, so right now I have some 17" wheels with tires size 215 40R 17 83W. Soon I will be upgrading to 18" wheels and I want to get tires with either the same profile tire, or a higher profile. I DO NOT like low profile tires (neither the look, nor the diminished cornering ability appeals to me). So, I want to know whats the highest profile tire that I can put on the 18s safely, so I can keep my cornering ability and that won't rub on my wheel well. . Also, extra credit to anyone who can break down and explain all the different numbers in the tire size ratings (which numbers correspond to width, height, etc...). I used to know all this, but I always forget it when the time comes to get new tires... All input will be appreciated!

18's with 35mm sidewall are the same as stock 15's with 55 sidewall. So the 40 would screw up the speedo yes but not as much as you think.
