I doubt im the only one who passes people on double yellows. I don't do it all the time but if i want to get by someone and its clear ahead I go for it...a few times when it wasn't clear but I set up the overtaking well so no worries. Surprises the hell out of people though! I wana hear some driving stories and habits, tendencies etc... I guess my problem is i cut corners alot and take apexes like its a one lane road...wups

I've seen many wrecks(mostly from less than 300 yards behind), which is why I avoid things like passing on double yellows and cutting corners.
But on to a story I remembered. The Celica saved my life. I left work early to get a part from the dealer(my clutch from TRD Japan, but that's a whole other story), on my way I have to take the highway for about 8 miles or so. I'm about to go under a bridge, when the truck 3 spots up gets cut off by someone who merged and cut over to the left lane without looking. The truck(mid 80's F-150) slams his brakes and starts spinning. So it's like dominoes the way people are slamming their brakes. I start sliding, rotating a bit clockwise, the guy in front of me starts skidding the other way(counterclockwise). It looks like everything is going to be ok, that's when I see the girl behind me not stopping fast enough. Almost like magic, the guy in front of me dips onto the median, giving me just enough room to swing back the other way onto the median myself. At this point the guy in front of me guns it and goes under the still spinning truck(front of truck about a foot from his car). I follow, with the back of the truck coming around at ME(missing by less than 6 in), and pull over far enough ahead of the truck so I don't get hit. Amazingly enough, no cars touched, and no one hit ANYTHING. The truck gave chase to the guy that cut him off. At this point my knuckles were white, my hands were a bit shaky, and my adrenaline was at an all time high. I let the truck pass, and then proceeded to the dealer. To this day, that is the most insane experience I have ever had. All my days of learning to control my car came together in one insane moment. I hope it never happens again, but at the same time there is no high like a perfectly executed save fueled by pure instinct and adrenaline. |
