I live with a couple of dogs who are just frightening to most people.

Cross a pit bull (think it's American terrier) and a Great Dane and you get 120 pounds of tough bitch known as Belle. She's the matriarch of my sister's, um, pack of three.

She's big, can be aggressive and is protective. We wouldn't trust her around kids and we're careful around other animals. Never had a problem with her because we're responsible.

Here's brilliance though -- my city council bans pit bull breeds from off-leash parks, and simultaneously makes it illegal to not exercise your dog.

Meanwhile, the only dogs I've ever been bitten by were those small enough to use as a football. I'm a lot more worried about getting bitten by a five to 30-pound dog than I am a 90-pound dog.

Look at Italy, they ban any breed found to have bitten a human. Recently banned corgis, the favourite pets of Queen Elizabeth.
