In other words, you properly socialized him. That's the major problem, owners not realizing that their dogs will be scared of anything unfamiliar and fear in the animal world is dealt with violently.

Rjb's story is case in point. She did provoke the dogs, by being unfamiliar or different and -- if this was an apartment or condo building -- by being in an area they considered their own. Had the owners educated their dogs to accept strangers, to not be defensive in common areas, your friend likely wouldn't have been attacked. There are bad dogs, but those are individuals. More often it's ignorant owners.

Unfortunately, pit bull breeds, because they have a reputation now for being violent, are chosen by those who want a violent dog. Generally that means an uneducated owner who likes seeing their dog act aggressively. That said, they're still not nearly as prone to biting as breeds such as the cocker spaniel, it's just because their bites cause so much more damage that they are reported.
