Hey all. I'm a new member, just signed up, and im purchasing a 94 celica tomorrow. the guy says it has another engine swapped into it, and that it was a 2.0L swapped in. i checked the engine, and the block(or head, i can't remember, i have a really bad memory) said it was a 3s with some other stuff, but i can't remember what else it said. so it really is a 2.0 it seems, though i can't remember if its a 3sge, or 3sfe. whats strange is that when the new engine got swapped in, they kept the 5sfe intake. can you guys tell from the head which 3s it could be? also, whats the hp ratings on either models?

the 3sfe and 5sfe are swapable, we had a camry with a 3sfe and we used a 5sfe block and head to replace the stock stuff when a rod snapped.
the valve covers and oil pans are teh same dimentions it's really only the blocks that are made much diffrently and the heads compression ratios and styles. the intake manifolds and exhaust manifolds from all the S (3s, 5s etc) will bolt up to each other but the ignition is slightly diffrent. as for your motor, you got a car that a 5sfe in it stock that was planned for a custom turbo setup from what i can see 5sfe parts are still there (manifolds and such) but they have been mated to the 2l cause it has thicker walls and can take more boost than the thinner 5sfe. the motor it's self is weak btu with an fi setup can make high power that won't push the block too far. the ecu choice probably had to do with tuning the boosted setup past 9psi (the max allowed by a FE motor's ecu) but the concept was incomplete, he did plan fuel upgrades (probably the 440cc injectors from a 3sgte) but his AFR gauge and SAFC from Apex-i was installed with out the boost to be able to control the fuel before hand. you should check to see the color of the injectors to see if they have been installed already. (hope for black and grey 2nd gen 3sgte 440cc injectors) if they have and you have relly stumbled across a half built turbo monster then i recomend you start looking for a ct20b, 3sgte oil pan (or check to see if you have a spare fiting on the one you have now) and some other toys. if not and this was simply a swap preformed to keep the car running then i would say run away from that car now. it's a weaker motor than stock and with the choice of hybrid parts and the miscomunications between the ecu and motor i would say that it's not worth the drama |
