I don't understand how you get better mileage if you drive at highway speeds, because when I drive on the highway I'm at ~3500-4000 RPM in 5th. When I'm driving local streets I'm usually around ~2000-3000 RPM and I'm not working the engine as hard, but I'm getting lower gas mileage?

Starting and Stopping in the city causes your car to become inefficient. Thats why hybrids shut their engines off at stop lights and start up when you take your foot off the brake. When your on the highway getting good gas mileage...your not starting or stopping, just pure going forward engine use. |

If im not wrong, toyotas are made to get better speed and mpg on highways and at higher speeds. My Auto shifts into 5th gear on the highway exactly at 80mph, and I have a high RPM around 4k. |
