I need to know why faq had to shorten his axles from the ae101 4a-gze to fit the celi and coom and all the others with the 20v 4a didnt. the gze is from the levin. i mean, why is it that the gze is so much harder to swap in an st than a 20v? and i dont want to hear that its cuz so many ppl have done it and its documented. i mean, besides the wiring, there should be much difference, right?

The tranny that comes with the 4AGZE is called the E51, or E58, I can't remember right now. Actually I think it's the E58. Either way, the tranny that comes with the 20v is the C56, or in some cases, the C160, which are the same design as the C52 in the Celica ST. Therefore, the C-series bolts right in with no custom parts.
Also, a C52 tranny can be used with a 4AGZE, it bolts right up and is quite sturdy. The E58 that comes with the 4AGZE could be used, however. You will need a couple of custom mounts, since they are different, and in theory you *could* be able to use the driver's side axle from a Mk1 MR2 Supercharged, and the passenger side axle from a Mk2 MR2 Turbo with LSD. I haven't actually tested that yet, and probably the lengths wouldn't be right, but at least you have something to start with. You can then have someone like Moser Engineering make you custom axle bars and you'd be set. Or, if you can get the whole front clip, you should be able to make the stock axles work. In any case, if a stock Toyota axle won't fit, custom axle bars can be made up by Moser Engineering for $300 for the set, and then the axles can be reassembled with the new bar. *edit* A couple more things. The E58 tranny has the same internals as the E153, which means that it's a very strong tranny, the best choice if you can make it work. Further, it appears that most if not all of the E58 trannys come with a helical LSD stock, which is great! -Doc This post has been edited by Dr_Tweak: Nov 29, 2005 - 1:01 AM -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |
