Coil Overs, How do these work? Options

Well, I feel like a real idoit asking this, but I'm going to anyway. How do coilovers like these work? Do you just a strut up inside them? I've wondered why people don't get these but get the $1200 ones with the thing already in the middle.

So, are their optoins besides the $1200 green ones? I'm not interested yet, but I'm trying to look ahead and coilovers are something I haven't delt with or anyone I know have delt with.

Bigmean, the way a coilover like the one you posted works is that it has a threaded aluminum sleeve that goes onto an OEM-style strut housing and sits on it like a spring would. Then there is an adjustable perch that the aftermarket spring will sit on that can be adjusted up or down to adjust the ride height of your vehicle. The whole assembly is put together and then bolted back onto your car.

I believe the "$1200 green coilovers" you speak of are the Tein SS coilovers like I have. They really are, IMO, the best suspension setup for our Celicas.....they change the characteristic of the car 100% and I love the ammount of adjustability and control I have now. Tanabe also makes a good setup from what I've heard, so my opinion is to save some beans and buy a good product like those I mentioned....they also are a full shock, spring, and adjustable perch setup unlike other coilovers which just come with the springs and adjustable perch/sleeve.


Your best bet outside of a well manufactured full coilover suspension is to get a set of Ground Control coilovers which are just the perch/sleeve and springs and buy Koni Yellow shocks to go with them. I would not even consider a crap set on EBay or anything less than superb quality on my car....I'd rather take comfort in knowing I spent my money on a quality product that is safe and tested to deliver positive results.

On that note, if you want something inexpensive and high quality then get a set of good springs like Tein, Eibach, or TRD. You wont have the adjustability of a coilover setup, but you WILL have a much better and more rewarding product in the end than a cheap set of coilovers. Just my .02
