Hi all,
I just have a few general questions about the 3rd gen 3sge (non-beams) that came in the JDM celicas.

1. How "tunable" is this engine? IOW, how does it respond to aftermarket modification? What kind of hp numbers have been seen with this engine?

2. How much aftermarket support is there for this engine?

3. What is an average cost for this swap? Is it much more expensive for the BEAMS?

4. How would you compare this engine to something like the b18c1 (Integra GSR engine)?

Thanks for your help.

J.

1. not very tunable. There are some modifications but they won't bring you a lot of HP. I think the absolute max would be about 195HP (full exhaust system, CAI, air filter-mushroom)
2. Support shouldn't be a problem (at least here in Europe)

If that's what you consider tuning... well... no... then it's about as tuneable as any other engine. Bolt-ons isn't tuning btw... they're merely bolt-ons. There isn't much "tuning" involved.

The 3SGE is a great platform to start off on with n/a tuning. By tuning I mean, camshafts, pistons, fuel/ignition tuning, intake tuning, etc. All engines are as tuneable as the amount of money you're willing to throw at it. Comparatively speaking, the 3SGE (2nd gen+) can outperform the B18C1 simply because it's a bigger engine. The B18C will always have some sort of top-end advantage over the 3SGE... but the 3SGE can delivery a much broader and useable powerband compared to the B18C1.
