When I would drive aggressively, the height of the 225/50/16, coupled with the 7" width of my wheel would result in the tire flexing laterally. The outer edge of tread and some of the sidewall (in extreme cases) would be contacting the pavement, reuslting in a noticable increase in steering effort once the load had shifted and a bit of sliding. A 7.5" wheel should make this at least somewhat less likely to occur as would a lower, stiffer sidewall. I didn't have problems day-to-day, but at an autocross it was definitely noticeable. I haven't been back out to a race since I have gone to a lower profile tire, but it "feels" better when doing foolish things on public roads.
