It started off as a 7A-FE block and head that was fully built with custom internal engine parts manufactured by their machinist. They had never worked on the 6th gen Celica until mine and it was a learning experience. The JDM 3S-GE and 3S-GTE swap was not popular at all back then for the 6th Gen and we had to make due with what resources were available. Dont get me wrong, the new motor was incredibly strong for naturally apsirated but the 3S-GTE just has a lot more room to expand power wise due to it being a turbo motor from the factory.
