7th gen short shifter question, this wasn't covered in the how to. Options

Hey, i just installed my 7th gen short shifter, and im wondering if anybody did this without putting the spacers in?? I did it first without the spacers, and it worked fine, but 2nd gear was tough to get into. So i put the spacers in, found out the spacers nearest to the rear of the car do not fit, so i just replaced the spacers nearest the front of the car. When i had the metal spacers in, the shifting was not any better at all, worse infact, and it was very noisy. So i put the rubber spacers back into the rear but left the metal ones up front. It is less noisy, and 3rd and 4th are smoother than ever. But 1st and second are really rough, and when i move my shifter left to right, i hear what sounds like a rubbing noise, I can't see whats rubbing though. I think i was better off with the stock rubber spacers..... any thoughts/suggestions??

p.s. it is not the cable rubbing as i cut the assembly where the cable rubbed for digndug and others.

aha! i see, alright so the reason it lokoed like my metal spacers would not fit, was because i would put the spacer down and then put the assembly down then try to screw the bolt into the chasis through the spacer... but the spacer didnt quite align right as it is on a bit of a slant. so i got in there held the spacer in the hole from under the assembly, put the bolt through the spacer, then let the assembly down, and that made it so the spacer could not move down the slight slant and i managed to bolt it in. I also lubed it up alot more and the shifter now is working fine. Thanks guys.
