 Car Won't Start, Engine doesn't turn over |

Hey everyone, I don't know where this would go since I do not have a celica anymore, but my MPV died tonight in the parking lot. When I turn the key to crank the engine over... there is only a click and nothing else. I still have electrical power as my headlights and interior lighting work, but the car does not turn over at all or even attempt to. The only noise is a one single click and some really low pitch squeeling noise that kinda sounds like sloshing buzz. I'm thinking its the distributor or alternator? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I know the battery cables are on nice and tight, but guess I'll have to go out and check tomorrow morning when theres enough light. Could there be a grounding problem too? As the battery has died twice and right now its on a fresh battery and once there was voltage surge that caused my radio faceplate to melt. Could that also do something?
