BEAMS - Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System

It's the name Toyota used to designate the VVT-i equipped 3S-GE engines.

Theres many different generations of 3S-GE's:
1st gen 3S-GE - 135HP
2nd gen 3S-GE - 160PS
3rd gen 3S-GE - 180PS
4th gen 3S-GE - 180PS (Greytop), 200PS (Redtop), 210PS (Blacktop)

How come they're not as popular? Here's a theory I have:
1. People don't bother to do research and go by what others say. And since most people here go by what they think is the best, you'd hear them say BEAMS.
2. Once they decide they want to get a BEAMS engine, they end up backing away from it because a. it's rare b. it's expensive.
3. When they see you could get a 3S-GTE for the price of a BEAMS engine, either a. they stick with what they have b. they decide to go with that instead.

Another, more basic theory I have, is that most people here are power hungry. So in order to satisfy their need for power, the 3S-GTE fits the bill.

Just theories I have, I could be wrong.

Performance? For daily city driving, both feel the same to me. I got around with both engines shifting @ 2400RPM just fine. On the highway it's totally different. 3S-GE just goes all the way to redline. Even with the 3.9 final drive it goes just fine. 5S-FE just says, "**** you. I ain't going anywhere". biggrin.gif

I/ve had both engines also and if you do your research and fit your 5S with the right parts it will also pull strong to redline. Redline was higher on the 3S-GE though. Actually my 5S is faster and more powerful feeling than my 2nd gen 3S-GE ever was. Track times are better too. The mods never really seemed to do much with that 3S engine. Never had the pleasure of a Beams but I can imagine.
