how do you install an oil catch tank/can? whats its main function?

It goes inbetween the crank case vent and your intake so that oil will collect in the catch can instead of going back through your intake tract. If you have a intercooler it is nice because it will keep sludgy oil from forming along the insides of the IC as well as the turbo, piping and intake manifold.
Some people just put a small breather filter on the crank case vent, but then all of this sludgy oil forms in the engine bay instead of anywhere else.
