Here's the thing, the MR2 also has the AFM like the Celica (not a MAF) and it has a blow off vavle. These BOV's dont vent to atmosphere, but re-route the air back into the intake (just after the AFM) so that the air is still in the system.

In this configuration, the car wont stall out and the turbo keeps its spool while shifting - imagine the clean, compressed air exiting the turbo, going through the IC then coming right back into the turbo retaining its speed. HKS has an adapter for their SSQBOV to acomplish this as well. The down side (for some) is that the BOV sound you like to hear is much quieter in this setup.

I've seen used MR2 BOV's for as low as $40. They have proven themselve's good for up to 30psi of boost (Sport Compact Car's MR2 buildup used the stock BOV during the complete 500+HP buildup).

The Celica All-Trac on the other hand did not get a BOV. Why? Because the car was not meant to be a high-production performance vehicle. It was only released to allow Toyota to compete in WRC. In fact, no TRD parts were available for the Celica until the MR2 was released.
