What does radar detectors really do? I want to know..do they really tell you when cops are around?? Cuase i'm tired of cops stopping me!! LoL ok give me input guys!

The very 1st day I had my Valentine1, I installed it and went somewhere, got on the highway, hadnt gone 3 miles and it went off, pointing ahead, half a mile up there was a cop with someone pulled over on the exit ramp. after i passed him, I sped back up, expected the unit to indicate he was beside me, then behind me, IT DIDNT, the arrow still pointed ahead, so as I'm cussing this POS, I look up and there is a 2nd cop in the median about 3/4 of a mile past the other one. Would have got me for sure,,,this incident made a believer out of me. I cant be without my V1 anymore. It helped pay for itself the 1st day.
