I am about to buy my first 6G Celica Convertible, after recently selling my Paseo Convertible (it was a good car, just a bit crude). I am looking to spend about $8,000, and for that price I can get a 1997 (Limited Edition) with about 68K miles or a 1998 with about 100K miles, or a 1999 with about 117K miles. I am tempted to go with the '97 and have the lower mileage. But, I noticed that they made some changes between '97 and '98, including upgrading to an 8 speaker sound system, a different steering wheel, and they changed the engine power curve, lowering the HP from 135 to 130, but increasing Torque a bit and to a lower RPM. My question is, do these changes provide any noticeable improvements to the '98s and '99s? I do love a good sound system, and if the newer models feel peppier, I would be tempted to go with one of those, but if the improvements are marginal, than I would probably stick with the '97. Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated! I also read on ConsumerGuide Automotive that the convertible tops on the '95-'97 models tend to wear near the rear window more, and that the defroster terminals break more easily. Is there any truth to this? Thanks again!!

Thank you all for your thoughts and opinions so far. Do any owners of '98 and '99 convertibles have trouble with the rear window becoming unstitched or with the defroster not working? The '98 that I mentioned above actually has a an aftermarket soft top with a plastic rear window. Is this a worthy substitute, or should I just go with one that has the real glass window?

Go with real glass. I was facing this same decision in February of 04 when I bought my 6gc convertible. I went with the 98. The main reason I limited myself to that is that 98-99 convertibles do not have problems with the top motors while the early models do. Also, the steering wheel looks 100x better IMO. Mine came with an aftermarket stereo so I can't comment on that. 100k miles on a 5sfe would not scare me at all - assuming the car has been properly maintained. Here is another piece of unsolicited advice: Only performance based modifications - koni yellows, lowering springs (or as a substitute for aftermarket struts and springs, some tein coilovers if you prefer) and some nice 17 inch wheels with some 45 profile tires. Then, my recommendation is to enjoy your car. You will maintain toyota like reliability and have a car that will be fun in the corners for years to come with little or no non-routine maintenance. -------------------- QUOTE(lagos @ Jul 10, 2006 - 1:55 PM) i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this. |
