Failed compliance today due to play in my rear left hand wheel, took to mechanic and he confirmed the bearing needs replacing but wasn't sure whether the whole hub needed replacement or just the bearing, looking to confirm. It's a 1996 3SGE st202 manual. Also is it possible to do this job myself? Im not that experienced but ill give anything a go.

First: If you have a ST202 then you should update your profile because its says ST hatchback
Second: SS only matters for the front. The rear suspension is the same for ST/GT, with the exception of drum/disc brakes for US models. Just replace the whole assembly, 4 bolts and your done. otherwise you need to remove the entire hub of the car and let it pressed.
