Bush wants to give a tax rebate to people to keep the economy from tanking any farther. Newest estimates are $800 per person who makes less then 85k and 1600 for married people who make less then 110k.

Just remember, that $800 isn't coming from nowhere -- hell, it's not even coming from the taxes you've paid. Those were already spent. It'll come from the ever-increasing US national debt whose interest payments are already eating tax dollars by the bucketload, the bucket-size also increasing.
Then again, it's not as if the government isn't doing the same thing its citizens have perfected: short-term thinking leading to an unescapable debt hole. That's why the sub-prime mortagage trend is causing this economic slowdown -- lending to people who can't afford to pay it back created an unsustainable economy and we're seeing the correction now. Exactly the same as the Asian flu, except you'd think the financial institutions would have learned something from watching most of a contienent drop into a massive recession a decade ago. |
