I was talking to a friend about getting new wheels and tires. Right now i have the stock wheels on and im going to get 17's. Would this affect the reading of the speedomter or odometer?

probably will a tiny bit, but shouldn't much. Try this website that will tell you the difference between factory and aftermarket tire sizes:
