well, i bought the celica with hopes of getting Much better gas mileage than my other car. 1999 mustang 3.8 v6 5 spd. so i filled it up last week, set the trip, and today the trip meter hit 280 miles and i was due for a fill up. well, it took 14.4 gallons. it comes out to about 19.5 miles per gallon. my mustang gets 21 average! i've gotten up to 30!. this really was quite a let down. i still love the celica but is everyone getting such horrible mpg?
maintainance is kept up. runs great. plugs, wires, filters. only thing i can think of is it needs of an alignment. what else could be the problem? thanks, sorry for knocking the celi's. Erich |

I drive in houston traffic EVERYDAY.... I got better gas mileage in the celica than I do in my acura TL.... I gotta agree with everyone else 25-28..... I took it to the track every friday so factor that in with the daily driving. On the week where I went downtown and drove houston traffic all week then ran the 1/8 mile all night friday and then went to baytown and ran the 1/4 all night saturday I averaged 22mpg racing all night 2 nights in a row on the same tank. So you seem to be used to a tad bit quicker acceleration and hence have a heavier foot on the take off. That is where you will burn a lot of gas. On the initial "dig" away from the light you flood the engine and dont burn off a lot and hence waste a lot on your leaving the stop signs/ lights.... idle away a bit let it catch then accelerate.... dont just jam the gas away from the stops. Like everyone is saying.... Put your right foot on a diet and you will see miracles happen with your mpg...
