Hello everyone I was just wondering if anyone here knows why the GT-FOUR wasn't available here in North America. Please specify any important reason. I am doing a report on it for school.
Thanks |

hmm this is gonna be a tough answer, mainly because your in canada and not in the USA. I can give you the american answer and hope it helps.
One of the reason was the gt4 was turbo charged which required toyota to add extra emission devices to comply with california (and other states) standards. The second reason was, the market for a small sporty car was pretty competitive. You would have to look at the competition at the time. The american mustang was cheap and powerful, the eclipse gsx was already a 4 wheel drive turbocharged car on the market, the integra GSR was dominating the small import scene. This is also the reason why we didn't get the SSIII. Instead toyota decided to put there efforts else where, such as the MR2 turbo and Supra. They also did some market research and the main buyers of the celica was females. So why would toyota go out and enter a already full market? I could bust out some hardcore business terms and do a SWOT analysis but it might get too confusing. To put in a very very brief solution, toyota did the math. They did not think they would make money to go through all the trouble to get the GT4 into the states. All this was backed up by the previous generations of poor all-trac sales. I actually wrote a research paper bashing the american car industry in college. ![]() |
