Gonna have a go at cleaning my engine bay on the weekend if the weather is promising, but my question is, would it be ok to get a power washer on it before i use start scrubbing and polishing?? its a budget power washer so not gonna rip things off...

If your gonna wash your engine do it when its warm (not hot) and try to avoid getting engine degreaser on the radiator...it wont do it any damage but it can stain it making it look ugly....also dont directly spry things like the dizzy, ignitor and electrical bits n pieces.
