hey guys. i will soon be painting my aftermarket rims. right now i have my stock rims back on. i was wondering if i would be able to remove the tires by myself to make painting easier. the tires are basically bald so i was planning on deflating each tire and maybe start hacking away at it with an axe or something.
is this a good idea? anyone else done it? i know i can get it done at a shop but if its easy doing it myself i can save like 20 bux. |

wow i didnt realize my thread became so epic. thanks guys!
not a good idea. those bands in tires are under stress even when the tire is deflated. id hate to see you cut a band and have it lash out at you like a rabid dog... i mean, try it ![]() video camera is a good idea. if i do it manually i will definetly record for youtube. I work at a tire shop... if you wanna drive up to livermore I'll dismount for you for free. I don't think you know how hard it's gonna be to get them off otherwise. I can take them all off in 5 minutes with a machine. lol thats awesome man! i wouldnt feel right about having you do it for free. i'd have to buy you lunch or something. If you hack your old tires off yourself, how do you plan on getting your new tires on once your rims are painted? if you're gonna go somewhere to have the tires mounted and balanced properly (which you REALLY should) you might as well see if they'll dismount the old tires for you as well. Even if you have to pay 20 bucks, isn't your time and safety worth it? hey. i had an awesome idea to get the new tired on. i would lay down the newly bought tires directly on top of the bare rim and drive over it. the weight of my car pushing down on the tire would surely force it into place. jk tho. i would get it installed at the shop in which i bought the new tires. i just thought i could save 20 or 30 bucks by doing something easy but i guess its not so easy taking off old tires. |
