bump stops, should I get some? Options

I'm pretty sure that when I installed the new shock/spring setup, the shocks did not come with bump stops. Now, if I hit a decent size pothole, it sounds like the shocks are really taking a beating (you hear a loud 'thump'). This happens about once a week... Would getting bump stops reduce the chance of that happening?

Also, would I have to take the shocks off the car (and take the springs off too) in order to put the bump stops in? I'm thinking it might be cheaper to wait until I have to change the shocks altogether so I don't pay twice for labor... What do you guys think?

If I could put them on without taking the shock out that would be great (even if I do it using duct tape hahaha)... I'd like to have them on before installing 17 inch wheels.

Will I have to get these from a dealer or can I get aftermarket ones?

Has anyone installed bump stops (or dampeners) with the shock already installed on the car?
