bump stops, should I get some? Options

I'm pretty sure that when I installed the new shock/spring setup, the shocks did not come with bump stops. Now, if I hit a decent size pothole, it sounds like the shocks are really taking a beating (you hear a loud 'thump'). This happens about once a week... Would getting bump stops reduce the chance of that happening?

Also, would I have to take the shocks off the car (and take the springs off too) in order to put the bump stops in? I'm thinking it might be cheaper to wait until I have to change the shocks altogether so I don't pay twice for labor... What do you guys think?

I imagine it goes on the shock slide, correct? (not sure if that's the correct terminology) I'd like to see a picture of someone's suspension assembly on here so I can figure where it's placed.

A picture would be greatly appreciated indeed. Does anyone know if I can buy a bump stop (like the one GotToyota asked about) and install it without taking out the shock?
