"American Party" Options

One of my mates is moving to America for 6 months and she is having a "American" fancy dress party.

I was hoping someone could help me decide what to wear. This is not meant to be offensive or anything. My gf took my original idea of wearing red white and blue.

Any help would be good.

See now, it all depends on what region of the country you're trying to emulate.

For example, if you're going north-east coast formal, you just need a really nice suit, preferably black or dark gray. (I have no idea what they wear in the south).

If you're going Texas formal, you're gonna wanna starch and iron your best, darkest Wrangler jeans, polish your cowboy boots, starch and press a white shirt, and get a honkin' ass bolo tie to wear with it. Lest we forget the 10 gallon (cowboy) hat.

If you're going Southwest formal, wear the above ensemble, just make sure there's an enormous piece of turquoise embedded in sterling silver on that bolo tie.

If you're going California formal, you're gonna want a light colored, probably something in the tan neighborhood, linen suit, and sandals that anywhere else only a gay man would wear.

Finally, if you're going Pacific Northwest formal, you're gonna want to dig out a pair of cargo shorts from the bottom of the hamper, along with any given tee shirt whether it matches or not, and pair this with your least-dingiest pair of white socks to wear beneath your Birkenstocks. Oh, and don't bother shaving for a few days either. For that matter, brushing your hair is optional as well.
