what about this, other forums are starting to do this....

QUOTE You cannot edit your thread if you do so. Therefore, get it right the first time. If you posted incorrect information or similar, simply reply to your own thread, with the correct information so buyers are aware.

Appending the message body sounds like a good solution to me too. If someone really wants to remove an image or something like that for an item that's been sold, they could just overwrite it with a picture that says "SOLD" or something like that, to prevent those who don't actually read the posts from inquiring about an already sold item.
