ever wonder what this hole in the carpet was for?

and apparently there's another hole on the driver-side floor mat as well...

but neither of the holes lined up with each other?

all this time i thought Toyota had finally f**ked up with something... ok ok it's not their first time. but here is what they're for..

oh gosh how i hated my floor mats shifting and cause the corners to curl >.< but i think there should be at least two holes per mat so that it's less likely to pivot and rotate. and it's too bad there aren't any for the passenger side..
also these came included with my new dealer option rubber mats... yay for rubber mats!!

i'm guessing the european cars had four holes (since i got 4 clips) where the usdm/cdm ones had only one...? can anyone confirm that?
i have no use of the other 3 so if anybody wants them, they're for sale in my other OEM parts FS thread.

anyway i just wanted to know if any of you were also stumped with these 'holes' on the floor...
