SEATTLE -- State troopers said they want to put the brakes on an alarming trend gaining speed -- racing on Interstate 5.

"There are about five cars on the freeway and they're speeding, and they're about to cause an accident," one caller said. "They were going too fast. They were weaving in and out of traffic, and they went by us like a bat out of hell."

Troopers said there were six cars in all. A traffic jam at a construction site on I-5 helped troopers catch up with three of the drivers, all in Mustangs.

"The 911 calls, the Department of Transportation workers directed troopers in," said Sgt. Dan Atchison.

In this case, the troopers caught a lucky break. But they say there are dozens more speed racers they've yet to catch who tear down local roads.

Every weekend, troopers said, Highway 167 turns into the Grand Prix as a car club of custom-modified Hondas race through Kent and Auburn. By the time troopers get the calls, they said, the cars are often long-gone.

"Other times you're in a position you have to back off of them, because they are so dangerous," said Atchison.

Troopers said the three drivers caught on Sunday - 18-year-old Benjamin Barclay, 21-year-old David Hampton and 21-year-old Jacob Williams - are members of a car club called "Rogue Squadron." All three are from the Bellingham area.

stupid kids gana get someone killed, wft though is freeway racing getting that popular? they need to find a way to crack down on it more.
