 Thumping noise |

Im getting a thumping noise on deceleration only. It sounds very similar to the noise you would hear if you had a flat tire. It is mostly noticeable where decelerating in 3rd gear, right around 2,000 rpm. Its hard to pinpoint if its coming from the left or the right side... kind of sounds like the clutch/trans right in the center of the front of the car.
Anyone deal with something similar to this? My original diagnosis was that my axle that had been leaking grease was the cause of the noise, but I swapped the axle out for a brand new one (needed to be done sooner or later anyway). but the thumping persists. Thanks for checking.
I guess what I really need then is for someone who happens to be under the car to push up on the axle, right where it meets the trans. That would tell me for sure if what im noticing is normal or not.
