it's pretty obvious it's a problem that they are way too close when you shift to 1st or 2nd (for the NA celicas) so is there any specific solution that you can share with me?

Think I found your problem. That's too much of a grip on the shifter. Personally I just use the tips of my fingers to pull the shifter and the 'heel' of my palm to push it.
The idea is to shift quickly and get both hands back on the wheel. |
