Replaced motor in my 94 celica gt with a 96 gt. (THANK YOU SOO MUCH 96gtok!!!) My transmission went out. Put in tranny out of 94 gt.
At first it would do nothing in reverse so we thought we were going to have to replace it again. The fuse for my windows blew about the same time, n when we replaced that, reverse magically started working. Coincidence? I took off down the road, my speedometer went out in about half a mile. My RPMs freaked out because of this. My car seemed to die so I pulled off the road and tried to take it back home. It wouldnt work in reverse again, and now nothing happened in drive. Turned it off and screamed for a few seconds, then tried again. It worked fine. Made it to the top of the hill and it did the same thing. I can drive about a mile before I have to turn it off and back on. The transmission is pulling fluid up through the filter, just not returning it. Evidence points to a possible wiring issue.... Any help or thoughts? This post has been edited by homeboy: Sep 13, 2009 - 10:48 AM |

you need to check the fluid level with the car running, a completely empty trans will take around 8 quarts of fluid or more. on a level surface, engine running, hot, foot on the brake, go through each gear position and wait for 2 seconds. park, reverse, nuetral, drive, two, low, then go back up again pausing for 2 seconds in each gear. then check the fluid level, if its not on the stick add fluid until it is on the stick in the middle of the cross hatch, take it for a short drive, park again, leave it running, recheck the fluid level and add until you're at the top of the cross hatch area.
your mechanic doesnt know how to check the fluid level on an automatic trans? good god, its printed right on the dipstick. i've yet to see any toyota automatic that you don't check while the engine is running, only some hondas do you check with the engine off. -------------------- |
